Press release: ITRE vote on Renewable Energy Directive and Energy Efficiency Directive – Ambition before technicalities

Nov. 28, 2017 | EHPA is satisfied with the increase of the targets for 2030, as compared to both EC proposals, and with the creation of a new specific sectoral target for renewable heating and cooling (art.23 REDII).

The ITRE committee has voted this morning in favour of new and more ambitious Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Directives.

EHPA also appreciates the trust shown by ITRE vis-à-vis the technical work of the EC, notably by supporting its realistic and reasonable proposal for a primary energy factor for electricity of 2.0 and by empowering the EC to decide on how renewable heating and cooling should be calculated in the future. It is unfortunate that this attitude was not followed for the definition of ‘ambient energy’, which appears in the revised version as very unclear and confusing.

Thomas Nowak said: “Today’s ITRE vote is an important signal for more energy efficiency and renewables. This ambition level needs to be maintained in the upcoming negotiations to bring the EU up to the Paris commitments.”
