Even though the new ammonia refrigerant would have made the factory more efficient, the payback period was too long, therefore the company decided to add the heat pump suggested by GEA in the investment. This extracts the waste heat from the refrigeration system and uses it in the process of milk pasteurization.
The heat pump can use the warm 32oC air and provide hot water at a temperature of 80oC. A precisely calibrated valve mixes it with cooler water to obtain a temperature of 76oC, necessary for an optimal milk pasteurization. To cool down the milk, the factory uses "recycled" heat from the pumps, chiller, compressor, heat pumps and even from the employees in the factory.
